Why planting in autumn is a brilliant idea

Why plant in Autumn rather than in Spring

When we think about arranging our garden, balcony, or terrace, most of us instinctively wait for spring.
However, autumn is actually the best season for planting. The soil remains warm, humidity increases, and plants can take root gently before winter. Less well-known, this season offers real advantages to give your plants the strongest possible start, whether in open ground or in containers.

Why fall is the best time to plant

After summer, the ground retains its accumulated heat. Combined with autumn’s natural humidity, this warmth creates ideal conditions for root growth and establishment. Unlike spring, when young plants must quickly face heat and occasional dryness, autumn gives them several months to root deeply and calmly before winter sets in. Planting in autumn means planting at the right time, when the earth is working with you.

Why autumn is the best season for rooting and plant recovery

Autumn is when everything begins underground. By planting during this season, you give your plants the chance to develop a deep, strong root system. Come spring, they can fully focus on growth and flowering. The result ? More vigorous, healthier, and longer-lasting plants, with a stronger and more balanced start than those planted later in the year.

Why it’s better to plant young plants in fall than mature ones in Spring

Many gardeners believe that buying a fully grown plant saves time. In reality, it’s the opposite. Young plants establish faster, adapt more easily, and grow without stress. Whether in open ground, in a pot, or in a container garden, they quickly adjust to their new environment. After just one season, they often catch up, or even surpass, larger, more mature plants, while being naturally more resilient and healthy.

Why panting in Autumn is the best choice for your plants

Autumn planting requires far less maintenance than in spring saving you both time and water. Cooler temperatures and regular rainfall help keep the soil moist, providing natural hydration to your plants.

However, for container plants and balcony gardens, things are slightly different. The reduced surface area of pots captures little rainwater, and most of it simply runs off the sides. To keep the soil evenly moist, water slowly and in two rounds, so the moisture reaches deep into the roots. Because their root systems are still developing, young plants remain a bit more sensitive — they’ll still need your attention to settle in well!

Sow and plant bulbs and perennials in autumn for a radiant spring

Planting in autumn means preparing for a spectacular spring.
Spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses rest underground during the winter and burst into bloom with the first rays of sunlight. By layering different bulbs in the same pot, a technique known as “lasagna planting” , you can create beautiful, long-lasting floral displays. Meanwhile, perennials planted in autumn quietly strengthen their roots, ready to flourish when the warmer days return.

Planting in Autumn instead of Spring means working with Nature !

It’s about giving young plants, bulbs, and perennials the right conditions to root, adapt, and thrive naturally. Sow your winter vegetables too ! Whether you garden on a balcony, a terrace, or a backyard, autumn is your best ally for creating a healthier, more resilient, and more beautiful garden.
